Moisturising

Moisturising is vital for healthy skin. Our skin requires regular attention to stay healthy, looking young and blemish free. You should moisturise regularly with a lotion or cream that has plenty of vitamins.

Moisturising helps with maintaining a youthful look and it combats the effects of the elements and the environmental exposure (sun, wind, rain, snow, cold etc. We also need to chose a moisturiser with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor). There is more information on this topic later on in the book.

The most exposed areas such as face, neck,  chest and ears, shed the most cells. They are frequently drier because of exposure to the elements and are the most frequent areas of our body to develop skin cancer12   and require more frequent moisturising.

 

Some advantages of moisturising include:

  1. Younger looking skin.
  2. A reduction in skin problems such as acne caused by excess dryness or oiliness.

 

A plant based moisturiser can help improve the appearance of skin as it leaves a sheer dewiness that conceals blemishes.

The type of moisturiser you should use on your skin depends on a number of things and what benefits you are after, but it   is ultimately down to personal preference or medical advise in case of skin disorders or other issues etc.

 

Anhydrous

These are creams with no water but mainly contain oils and butters. These preparations are usually organic and most certainly natural. They can be very moisturising and nourishing because instead of water they contain have much more vitamins and nutrients.

 

Emulsions

Emulsions contain both oils and water. They need to be preserved because of the water content.

Deep Facial Cleansing Tips

The face is constantly exposed to the elements and being damaged by environmental pollution and air quality. The face is the only section of the skin which is exposed all year round.

Therefore it is vital to take more care of the face than any of body part.

Care for your face with this deep cleansing, detoxifying and moisturizing regime:

Deep Organic Skin Cleansing Routine

Step 1: Use a cleansing face oil on moist cotton pads to gently remove any touch make up – such as mascara, brow pencil and lipstick.

Step 2: Remove all traces of the cleansing oil with a natural ingredient toner  or rosewater soaked cotton pads. Rose adds and helps to retain moisture and is suitable for normal, dry, mature and sensitive skin.

Step 3: Cleanse the face thoroughly using a bi-­‐phase (water and oil) cleansing lotion or a cream cleanser. Work the cleanser deeply into all the nooks and crevices of the face. Take your time.

Step 4: Remove the cleanser with a muslin cloth moistened with hot water. Massage the cloth into all the nooks and crevices of the skin. Keep dunking the cloth into hot water, the heat from the cloth will help the cleansing process.

Step 5: Repeat the cleansing process with a facial polish or scrub (you can use maize or oat meal mixed with a little oil so that is slides over the skin). This step isn’t mandatory but is good to use 2-­‐3 times a week or if skin is looking dull. Remove polish with the hot muslin cloth.

Step 6: Swipe over the face with cotton pads soaked in rosewater (or other hydrosol of choice) to remove all traces of cleansing products.

Step 7: Apply a deep-­cleaning facial mask and relax for 5-­10 minutes. Apply hydrosol-­soaked cotton pads to the eye area or your own brand of eye gel/serum.

Step 8: Remove the mask with cellulose sponges and warm water.

Step 9: Ensure all traces of mask are gone then swipe over the face with hydrosol-­soaked cotton pads.

Step 10: Pat the skin dry with a soft towel and apply your natural serum.

Step 11: Once the serum has been left on for 15 minutes, gently press a tissue to the face to absorb excess oil or leave for skin to soak up naturally if time permits.
